Mini activity at the kindergarten: Understanding waste separation through play

At the “Spatzennest” daycare center in Huttengrund, everything recently revolved around an important topic for the future: waste separation. The educators set themselves the task of introducing this subject to the children in a playful and easy-to-understand way. Using child-friendly books, short stories, and interactive activities, the children learned why separating waste is important and how they themselves can contribute to protecting the environment.

The children especially enjoyed the support of the “Trennbär” (sorting bear), who accompanied them through the various stations in a motivating way. With his help, learning became not only more visual but also truly exciting. The little “Sparrows” were enthusiastic, highly motivated, and took part in every task with great interest.

Another highlight of the activity was the support provided by Immergut in Schlüchtern. The company supplied small Immergut milk cartons, which were then “properly” disposed of together afterward – a practical, everyday example that immediately encouraged hands-on participation.

Christine, Sustainability Manager at Immergut, explained in a child-friendly manner how to push the paper straw out of the plastic wrapping without detaching the plastic sleeve from the Tetra Pak. Using simple words and a playful wink, she showed the children how to handle packaging correctly – and why this is important.

In this way, a small activity turned into a sustainable experience that was not only fun, but also gave the children a valuable awareness of responsible resource use.
